Alyssa

It was a lovely, sunny Monday morning and Alyssa was starting at her new school.  Alyssa had moved house recently and joined a school closer to her house.

Although Alyssa was a bit upset to leave her old school and friends, she was looking forward to making friends at her new school.

Tilly and Tom had agreed with Miss Humphries to help Alyssa on her first day and met her in the classroom.

"Hello Alyssa and welcome to your new school," said Tilly cheerfully.

"Hello Alyssa," greeted Tom, "you will really like it at our school.  It's the best school."

"Thank you," replied Alyssa smiling back at Tom and Tilly while feeling a bit nervous.

"This is your seat," said Tilly as she pulled out a chair from under the table.  “Tom will sit on this side and I'll sit on the other side.”

The children sat down comfortably and started chatting about what they enjoy doing at break times.

“Good morning children," greeted Miss Humphries cheerfully as all the children had arrived and were seated.  "Today we have Alyssa starting in our class so can we all say a very special welcome to her please?"

"Hello Alyssa,” greeted all the children happily.

Alyssa felt a bit shy and hesitated for a few seconds before saying, "hello everyone."

Miss Humphries smiled at Alyssa reassuringly and started registration and then announced it was time for maths.

"Maths is my favourite subject," said Alyssa.

"No way!” said Tom frowning, "it's not my favourite subject!"

After maths, it was break time and the children ate their snacks and then went onto the playground.

"What would you like to play Alyssa?" asked Tom, "we could play football or basketball."

"Can we play hopscotch?" asked Alyssa.  She had seen the hopscotch while waiting with her mom in the playground earlier.

"Yes, let's play hopscotch!” said Tilly, “you can go first Alyssa."

"Thanks," replied Alyssa standing ready at the hopscotch.

"Wait!" shouted Tom, "don’t we need to do our warm ups first?"

"Oh my, I forgot about our warm ups," said Tilly shaking her head.  "Silly me!  Thanks for remembering Tom."

"What are warm ups?" asked Alyssa looking puzzled.

"Come on Alyssa, Tilly, over here," called Tom.

He had found enough space for all three of them to do their warm ups safely.

The children started their warm ups and Alyssa was eager to join in and did very well considering it was her first time.

“1 2 3 4 5 clap your hands and touch your toes,

6 7 8 9 10 turnaround and stretch your arms,

Let’s jog on the spot,

And be a robot,

Now that we’re all done,

It’s time to have some fun.”

After the children had finished their warm ups, they raced over to the hopscotch and an excited Alyssa went first.  Alyssa was very fast on the hopscotch and Tilly went next.

Tom had a go too and was making the girls laugh by trying to go backwards!

The bell rang which meant playtime was over, so all the children returned to their classrooms.

Happily seated on their chairs, the children listened carefully to Miss Humphries who was writing some words on the board.

“These are the words I would like you to include in your story writing,” explained Miss Humphries.

"I think my story can be about my new friends and hopscotch," whispered Alyssa with a smile.

The children took their time in writing their stories whilst making sure their handwriting was neat.  Miss Humphries then collected all of the stories.

“That was fun, I enjoyed writing about my new friends and playing hopscotch,” said Alyssa happily.

"Are you dinners or sandwiches Alyssa?" asked Tilly, patting her hungry tummy.

 "I'm sandwiches," replied Alyssa.

"Awesome!  We are too," said Tom.

All of the children went to wash their hands first and then collected their sandwich bags.  They lined up waiting to go into the hall to eat their lunch.

As they were eating their lunch, Arjun came over.

"Hello," he said with a smile, "you must be Alyssa.  Tilly told me last week that she has a new friend starting in her class.  My name is Arjun."

"Hi Arjun," said Alyssa with a smile.

Arjun returned to his table to finish his lunch.  Alyssa, Tom and Tilly ate their lunch and talked about going to the park after school.

"I can't come to the park today," said Tilly, "my mom is taking me to the doctors later."

"Why are you going to the doctors?" asked Alyssa.

“My ear has been hurting and I cannot hear very clearly," replied Tilly.

“That's sad," said Tom thoughtfully, "my dad says our five senses are really important."

"My mom gave me some medicine before I came to school and I felt better.  My dad is coming after lunch to give me another spoonful of medicine just in case my earache comes back again," explained Tilly.

"Yes, my mom also says our 5 senses are important," added Alyssa. "Touch, smell, sight, taste and hearing are very important.  I hope the doctor can help you get your hearing back to normal."

"I hope so too," said Tilly yawning, "I hope I can sleep better tonight."

After finishing their lunch, Alyssa said, “I’m taking my drink carton home as I’m going to put it in the recycling bin.  My mom says recycling things is very important.”

Tilly said she already takes her drink carton home with her as she knows all about WASUP which stands for World Against Single Use Plastic.

Tom agreed to take his drink carton home too, so packed it away in his sandwich bag.

"Let's play tag," shouted Arjun as he gently tapped Alyssa on her shoulder as the children made their way onto the playground.

Alyssa pulled a funny face and decided to run after Tom as he appeared to be the closest to her.  "I'm going to catch you Tom," she said as she ran after him and tapped him on his back.

"Run Alyssa!" shouted Tilly as she could see Tom running closely behind her.

Alyssa was laughing and running in a zig zag line trying to make it difficult for Tom to catch her.

Tom ran faster and faster but wasn't able to catch up with speedy Alyssa so he decided to run in the opposite direction towards Tilly.

"Oh no!" chuckled Tilly as she did her little wriggle and ran towards Arjun.

The children had so much fun playing with their new friend Alyssa and played until lunchtime was over and returned to their classrooms.

Back in the classroom, Miss Humphries did the register and asked the children to get ready for PE.

"Can you all get ready to change into your PE kits please children?  Miss Baker will be here any second now."

“I enjoy PE,” said Tom, “especially if we play football because it’s my favourite sport.”

“I like to play basketball,” said Alyssa cheerfully, it was nice talking to her new friends and telling them what she enjoys doing.

“Tilly, can you go the office first as your dad is here to see you?" asked Miss Humphries.

Tilly was pleased her dad had arrived with her
medicine as her ear was starting to hurt again.

"Yes Miss Humphries," replied Tilly, as she went to the office.

Tilly had her medicine and quickly returned to the classroom as she didn't want to miss PE.

Miss Baker arrived to take the children to the hall for PE.  "Come along children, can you all get into a single line please?"

There was lots of shuffling and laughing as the children finally got into a single line ready to walk down to the hall for PE.

"Can I have your attention please children?" asked Miss Baker as they arrived into the hall.  "After our warm ups we are going to start with hula hoops and skipping ropes."

All the children enjoyed doing their warm ups and reminded each other why warm ups are important. They know it helps reduce the risk of any muscle pain.

“I’ve already done these warm ups at break time,” said Alyssa feeling quite proud of herself as she was able to keep up.

After their warm ups, the children collected hula hoops and skipping ropes and stood in lines ready to start.

Most of the children were swapping their hula hoops and skipping ropes as some found skipping easier and others found hula hooping easier.

It was so much fun and there was lots of giggling.

Tilly found the hula hoop quite tricky "this is impossible!" she said looking frustrated and decided to get a skipping rope instead.

"Keeping active is fun, well done children," said Miss Baker as the children were trying very hard to skip and hula hoop.

Tilly was pleased she had more success with her skipping rope than her hula hoop. She did her little wriggle and continued with her skipping.

Alyssa, confidently kept her hula hoop going for a few minutes and most of the children stopped to watch her in amazement.

"Where did you learn to hula hoop so well?" asked Tilly, looking amazed.

Some of the children gathered around Alyssa and started clapping.

"I've got a hula hoop at home," giggled Alyssa who was beginning to lose her rhythm and then her hula hoop finally landed on the floor.

After PE, the children changed back into their school uniforms quickly and got ready for story time.

Miss Humphries chose a lovely story to read which was quite funny and made the children laugh.

"Oh my goodness!" exclaimed Miss Humphries looking at her watch, "how fast has the day gone today?  It will be home time soon so go and get your coats and bags please."

"Let's have you all in a single line please children," instructed Miss Humphries as the home time bell rang.  "Alyssa can you come to the front please?"

"Here I am," smiled Alyssa, making her way to the front of the line.

"How has your first day at school been Alyssa?" asked Miss Humphries.

"It's been the best day Miss Humphries!" replied Alyssa.  "I can't wait to come back tomorrow."
