Fun Fair

It was Saturday morning and Danny had arranged to meet his cousin Destiny at the Fun Fair and introduce her to his friends. He had talked about Destiny to his friends at school and how he was learning sign language to communicate with her as she was deaf.

Tilly, Tom, Zara and Arjun were amazed with Danny learning sign language.

Arriving at the Fun Fair with his mom, Danny was very excited. "Can I go on the bumper cars first mom?" he asked, tugging at her arm impatiently.

"Yes, of course you can," said Danny’s mom smiling at him, "but let's wait for Destiny and your friends first as it will be much more fun with them.”

"Here they come!" said Danny eagerly as he saw Arjun, Tilly, Zara and Tom walking over with their parents.

"Hello,” greeted the children and their parents. The children chatted excitedly to each other and discussed which rides they were going on.

Danny felt a familiar tap on his shoulder and turned around. "Hi Destiny," he said, hugging his cousin.

He stood facing Destiny as he talked to her as sometimes she lip reads even though she wore her hearing aid.

"My friends are here and they would like to meet you," he said, turning towards his friends and calling them over.

Danny's friends hugged Destiny.  Zara had remembered to remove her chewing gum and put it in the bin as Danny had told her that if she was trying to talk to Destiny while chewing her gum, it would make it difficult for Destiny to clearly lip read.

Danny had also asked his friends not to speak too quickly and to only speak one at a time so Destiny could lip read the person who was speaking to her.

"Okay then kids," said Danny's mom, "where are we going first?"

Destiny waved her arms excitedly and then pretended she was driving a car and bumped into Danny. Both cousins started laughing and shouted "bumper cars, let's go!"

Destiny smiled at Danny and continued to pretend to drive her car and bump into the children one by one as she approached the bumper cars.

Tilly was right behind Destiny doing her little wriggle while also pretending to drive her car. Both girls couldn't control their excitement and smiled at each other.

Destiny smiled at Tilly and copied her little wriggle which made Tilly laugh.

The children queued for a few minutes and then jumped into the cars whilst the attendant told them to get ready and put their seat belts on.

The ride started and as expected there were more bumping cars than driving. Destiny was the fastest and bumped her car into as many cars as she could.

Tilly was glad she was wearing her seatbelt.  She told herself that safety must always come first as speedy Destiny continued to bump her car into her!

Arjun was being very clever while driving his car as he was trying to avoid as many cars as possible. "It's more fun letting our friends think they're going to bump us, but at the last second we move out of the way," he shouted over to Tom.

The ride continued for a few minutes and all the children had so much fun. There was lots of bumping and laughter while the parents took photos to capture their childrens’ giggles.

As the ride finished and the children made their way over to their parents, Destiny spotted the hook-a-duck stall. This was also one of her favourite stalls as she always won a prize because her concentration skills were very good.

Destiny cheerfully shouted “hook-a-duck next.”  She flapped her arms like a duck while laughing loudly and pointing to the 'hook-a-duck' stall.

"Next stop, the ducks then!" confirmed Tom as he followed Destiny.

"Quack quack" shouted all the children as they marched over to the stall and waited patiently for their turn.

All the children concentrated hard which resulted in them all winning prizes and then proudly showing their parents.

Next it was time for lunch so the children made their way over, with their parents, to the lunch area. They had brought packed lunches with them.

"Here's some wipes children," said Arjun's dad passing the wipes to his son.

Arjun took a wipe and then passed the pack to Tilly. All the children cleaned their hands and remembered to clean between their fingers.

The children chatted and giggled while eating their lunch and remembered that although Destiny was wearing her hearing aid, she may want to lip read so they spoke slowly and didn’t talk over each other.

Destiny was having a great time with Danny and his friends and she liked how they were trying to use sign language to communicate with her.

After lunch, the children went on more rides and had the most amazing time.

When they came off the teacups ride they noticed a little girl stood alone and crying. Zara’s mom went over to her and asked her why she was upset.

“I’ve lost my dad,” said the girl.

“Oh dear” said Zara’s mom, “we will try to help you.”

“My dad says I shouldn’t speak to strangers,” said the girl, still crying.

“That’s okay,” said Zara’s mom, “it’s very important that you don’t talk to strangers. I’m going to go over to the help desk and ask a member of staff to make an announcement for your dad to come over. What’s your name?”

“My name is Isabella,” she said with a sniffle.

“Isabella, you wait here with the children and parents while I quickly go over to the help desk,” said Zara’s mom as she speedily walked over to get some help.

Within seconds, an announcement was made, “could Isabella’s family come over to the teacups ride please? Thank you.”

Isabella’s dad came running over and hugged his daughter tightly. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you Isabella, are you okay?”

“Yes,” replied Isabella as she hugged her dad and then held his hand tightly.

Zara’s mom explained to Isabella’s dad how they saw her standing alone and upset and went to get help.

“Thank you so much for all your help, I was so worried as this is Isabella’s first time at the Fun Fair,” said her dad who was starting to look very relieved.

“I’m really sorry for wandering off dad, I promise I’ll never do it again,” said Isabella. “I thought while you were getting the tokens I could quickly go and look at the ride. When I turned around to call you, I couldn’t see you and I felt so scared.”

“That’s okay, you’re safe now” replied her dad. “We must always remember when we are out to always stay with our grown-ups because our safety is very important.”

“Thanks again,” said Isabella’s dad looking towards Zara’s mom. “I really appreciate your help and quick thinking.”

“You’re welcome,” replied Zara’s mom.

They all said goodbye to Isabella and her dad and headed towards the ice-cream van to get some yummy ice-creams.

At 4.o’clock it was time to go home. The children wanted to stop longer as they were were having such a wonderful time.

Maybe we can arrange to come again,” suggested Destiny's mom.

Yippee, can we mom?” asked Danny.

"Mom, can we come again soon please?" asked Tilly. She had had such an enjoyable day with her friends.

"Yes, I think it would be nice to come again," said Tilly's mom looking over at the other parents.

"Oh yes definitely," agreed the parents.

As the children, along with their parents, arrived in the car park, they hugged each other and said their goodbyes.

As Destiny got into the car, she leaned over to her mom and kissed her cheek before putting her seatbelt on.  She had had such a wonderful day with Danny and his friends and would never forget it.
